Complex Case Consultation

Support for complex behavioral, educational, developmental, and system-level concerns

Complex Case Consultation is for families, providers, schools, programs, and care teams navigating situations that need a deeper look than standard coaching or general recommendations can provide.

This service may be helpful when a child’s needs involve multiple settings, providers, plans, diagnoses, safety concerns, school questions, placement considerations, or recommendations that feel unclear, conflicting, or difficult to put into action.

The goal is to help make sense of the bigger picture, identify what may be missing or misaligned, and clarify next steps.

This May Be a Good Fit If the Situation Involves

  • Multiple diagnoses or complex developmental, behavioral, or emotional needs

  • Frequent crises or repeated escalation

  • School refusal or difficulty accessing school consistently

  • IEP, placement, or school support questions

  • Repeated CBAT admissions, hospitalizations, or higher levels of care

  • DCF involvement or multi-system coordination

  • Residential placement consideration

  • Safety concerns, including aggression, elopement, self-injury, or high-risk behavior

  • Multiple providers or care team members with different recommendations

  • Behavior plans, treatment plans, or supports that are not leading to meaningful progress

  • Families or teams feeling unsure what is missing, what to prioritize, or what to do next

When a Fresh Set of Eyes May Help

The Team Feels Stuck

Multiple interventions, behavior plans, accommodations, services, or supports have been implemented, yet meaningful progress remains limited. Teams may find themselves revisiting the same concerns without a clear path forward.

Something Isn't Adding Up

The explanations being offered do not seem to fully explain the concerns, recommendations do not appear to match the individual's needs, or there is a sense that important pieces of the picture may be missing.

Different People Have Different Perspectives

Big Decisions Need More Clarity

Questions regarding educational placement, level of care, behavioral supports, programming, or treatment recommendations require a deeper review of the available information before moving forward.

Parents, schools, providers, and support teams may all be seeing something different. This process helps identify areas of agreement, areas of disconnect, and the factors contributing to those differences.

Types of Cases I Commonly Support

Our Process

Terms such as "refusal," "attention-seeking," "manipulative," "oppositional," or "noncompliant" do not always explain why a pattern is occurring. This process focuses on understanding what may be happening underneath the behavior.

Looking Beyond Labels

Many consultations focus on one setting, one provider's perspective, or one specific concern. Complex Case Consultation is designed to look across the broader picture.

The goal is to understand how behavior, learning, emotional regulation, environment, expectations, team responses, and available supports interact with one another.

Information is reviewed across settings, providers, records, and observations to identify patterns that may not be visible when each piece is viewed separately.

Connecting the Dots

Sometimes goals, expectations, interventions, or support plans do not match the individual's actual needs, abilities, learning profile, or regulation capacity. Identifying these mismatches can be critical to improving outcomes.

Identifying Misalignment

The purpose is not to determine who is right or wrong. The goal is to help caregivers, schools, and providers develop a shared understanding of what is happening and what needs to shift moving forward.
